Cultural Tourism in Spain: Theatres in Seville

By admin at 2:58 am on Saturday, April 14, 2007

Seville presently has theatres and cultural centers that has permitted the Andalusian capital to enter in a circuit of international theatre, opera and orchestra companies.
The Teatro Lope de Vega was built for the 1929 Latin American Exposition, forming part of the Exposition’s Casino of the Seville Pavilion. Today, and after thorough remodeling it houses musical and theatrical performances.
The Teatro Central and the Teatro de la Maestranza were also inherited from a World’s Fair, in this case Expo ‘92. The first is located on the Cartuja Island, offering vanguard theatrical and musical performances. Programming includes influences such as classical and temporary theatre, jazz, rock and flamenco with its Flamenco Viene del Sur series.
The Teatro de la Maestranza offers performances which vary from dance, opera, zarzuela (light opera) and classical concerts with interventions from the Royal Symphonic Orchestra of Seville.
The Auditorio (Auditorium) is an open air theatre where large event concerts are held throughout most of the year due to Seville’s mild climate.
We wouldn’t want to close this brief chapter on Culture in Seville without mentioning the Centro Andaluz de Teatro (Andalusian Theatre Center) and the Compañía Andaluza de Danza (Andalusian Dance Company), whose staged performances both in Seville and abroad have enriched Seville’s cultural scene and have contributed in promoting Andalusia.Source:turismo.sevilla.org

Celebrations in Seville : April Fiesta

By admin at 2:45 am on Saturday, April 14, 2007

After celebrating Holy Week, residents of Seville, Spain rest up for the real party two weeks later — the Feria de Abril (April 24 to 29), which celebrates all things Andalusian, from bullfighting and equestrian displays to flamenco dancing and sherry tasting.
The fiesta, which began as a cattle trading fair in the mid-1800s, draws thousands of visitors to the brightly striped tents (casetas) set up each year outside the city center and decorated with paper lanterns.
The festivities begin with the lighting of the main gate at midnight on Monday and end the following Sunday with a fireworks display. In between, the real action is in the tent city. By day, a noon procession of girls parade in their best flamenco outfits while wandering minstrels play Sevillana guitar music. By night, after the early evening bullfight in the Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza, the crowds return, many by horse-drawn carriage, to party until breakfast. Luckily, there is usually at least one tent with cots set up for those in need of a nap.Source:travel.nytimes.com

Business Tourism in Spain: Congresses and Other Events in Seville

By admin at 2:38 am on Saturday, April 14, 2007

Hundreds of conferences, exhibitions, and other events secure Seville’s reputation as one of the most important business travel destinations in Spain.
Every year, Seville hosts all kinds of fairs, symposiums, and professional meetings at the Exhibition and Convention Centre (FIBES), located at the gates of the city. It is a modern complex of futurist architecture, consisting of a main building, two lateral buildings, and three exhibition pavilions: a total of 30,000 square metres of exhibition space that includes an auditorium with capacity for more than a thousand people, conference rooms with multimedia equipment, restaurants, and cafeterias.
Seville’s accommodation capacity is beyond doubt, with around 10,000 four- and five-star hotel beds, and around 3,500 beds in three-star hotels.
The Alfonso XIII Hotel, located in a Neomudejar building, and the Casas de la Judería Hotel, located in the centre of the old Jewish quarter, in the former home of the Duke of Béjar, stand out among its unique accommodation. On the outskirts of Seville, there are three specially significant hotels: The Hacienda Benazuza (Benazuza Country Estate), in Sanlúcar la Mayor; the Casa de Carmona Hotel; and the Parador Alcázar del Rey Don Pedro, in Carmona.
