Celebrations in Seville : April Fiesta

By admin at 2:45 am on Saturday, April 14, 2007

After celebrating Holy Week, residents of Seville, Spain rest up for the real party two weeks later — the Feria de Abril (April 24 to 29), which celebrates all things Andalusian, from bullfighting and equestrian displays to flamenco dancing and sherry tasting.
The fiesta, which began as a cattle trading fair in the mid-1800s, draws thousands of visitors to the brightly striped tents (casetas) set up each year outside the city center and decorated with paper lanterns.
The festivities begin with the lighting of the main gate at midnight on Monday and end the following Sunday with a fireworks display. In between, the real action is in the tent city. By day, a noon procession of girls parade in their best flamenco outfits while wandering minstrels play Sevillana guitar music. By night, after the early evening bullfight in the Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza, the crowds return, many by horse-drawn carriage, to party until breakfast. Luckily, there is usually at least one tent with cots set up for those in need of a nap.Source:travel.nytimes.com
