More Parks and Gardens in Bilbao: Europa Park and Bidarte Park

By admin at 2:51 am on Wednesday, April 18, 2007

Europa Park:

Located in the corner of the Santutxu, Otxarkoaga and Txurdinaga districts, it is a leisure area finished in 1988 and designed in Romantic style by the architect Manuel Salina, whose aim was to provide the city’s new residential areas with a green space. It consists of a net of paved walkways, green and leisure areas adorned by sculptures, and multi-purpose buildings, refurbished in 2002, in which different kinds of activities are performed (there is a greenhouse, some bandstands, a pavilion, a sports front wall, a fitness room, and other facilites).
Bidarte Park:

Only three years ago, the area where the park lies today was a forsaken and dilapidated urban site, the garden which used to belong to the old 18 de Julio Clinic. Now it houses a modern park, illuminated by lots of neon lights, surrounding the Deusto district’s centre. The leisure area stretches between Lehendakari Aguirre street and Enekuri Avenue, and it is divided into two zones: one has many fountains and banks made of concrete and Dutch pine ; the other is the children’s corner.
Vegetation: plane trees (some of them are the oldest in the village, a hundred years old, and over 30 metres high). Source:2.bilbao.net

Parks and Gardens in Bilbao: Doña Casilda Park

By admin at 9:19 pm on Tuesday, April 17, 2007

With a long history of almost 100 years now (its construction started in 1907), Doña Casilda Park is the main park in town. It was designed in Romantic style by the architect Ricardo Bastida and the engineer Juan de Eguiraun. From its early days on, it has been renewed and embellished, preserving the charm coming from its wonderful pond full of ducks and its typical biscuit sellers, a indelible scenery in the mind of every Bilbao dweller. Recently, the park’s infrastructure has been improved and extended to include a classical merry-go-round, two basketball pitches, a dancing water s fountain, a stage for live performances (called La Pérgola , or “pavilion“), and the Fine Arts Museum café, whose terrace looks onto the park, now being extended to reach the refurbished Abandoibarra area.
Vegetation: Among the trees planted in the park we can find magnolia and plane trees. Beautiful flowers, such as the inconspicuous flowers of the Nissa sylvatica, beautiful magnolias, and flowers growing in Japanese pagoda trees, adorn the park.
Sculptures: There is a sculpture honouring Tonetti the clown, created by Eduardo Chillida; there is also a figure representing Casilda de Iturrizar y Urquijo, and a monumental fountain designed by Aureliano Valle.Source:2.bilbao.net
