Montenegro Tourism: A name in the world

By admin at 6:18 pm on Wednesday, May 30, 2007

Renewal of the state of Montenegro has enabled a faster development of tourism because the political stability was one of the pre-conditions for intensive progress - noted Montenegrin minister of tourism and protection of environment Predrag Nenezic. He said that Montenegro, even while it was in the state union it has built a legislative frame in that area has begun the privatization, and already created its name in the world.I think that from regaining of independence we have managed even better to position Montenegro in Europe and in the world, as well as that that image is of high quality. That quality begun to appear on world markets, which is a demanding job, from the aspect of time and finances but also we should point out for now it is going very well - thinks Nenezic.
He added that the Government and the ministry in charge with the experts from world Center for tourism and traveling have projected the results, that is the two-digit rates of growth of income and number of tourists. Source:visit-montenegro.com

When: 15 - 22 Jun 2007 (annual)Where: ZagrebZagreb’s annual Urban Festival is an ambitious and exciting multimedia project comprising performances, art installations and urban interventions by performing and visual artists. The project is based on the modern concept of art as a social component that tries to communicate actively with the urban population, making use of abandoned, out-of use locations in the ex-industrial zone of eastern Zagreb. The artists are given free access to the urban infrastructure; streets, squares and buildings are all up for grabs. Festival organisers have chosen pieces which specifically address urban issues, performed by international artists who attempt to change the urban landscape and human behaviour patterns within it.Participants come from as far afield as Argentina, Canada, the USA and the UK, as well as from within Croatia itself. Discussion forums and workshops take place alongside the performances and festival “happenings”. Source:whatsonwhen.com

When: 25 - 27 Jan 2008 (biennial)
Where: Pernik

The Surva International Festival of Masquerade Games, held every two years in the town of Pernik, near Sofia, is one of the most important cultural events in Bulgaria. More than 5000 masked participants from all over the country take part in fancy-dress parades and dances.

Costumes and game performances are judged by a jury consisting of ethno, folk and culture specialists. Traditionally in Bulgaria these masks and those wearing them are called Survakari (hence the name of the festival) or Kukeri.
The origins of this tradition stretch back to ancient pagan times when the Thracians and Slavs ruled the land. It was believed that the mask had the power to protect its wearer against evil, which explains why costumes have a fearful appearance. Today the festival is still as popular as ever, providing a mystical fusion of rhythm, sound and colour. Expect parades and concerts by folklore groups in Krakra Square.Source:whatsonwhen.com

By admin at 9:31 pm on Thursday, May 24, 2007

The Prado doesn’t own all the great Spanish art in the country. Located in the early-17th-century convent of La Merced, this museum is famous for its works by such Spanish masters as Valdés Leal, Zurbarán, and Murillo. Spain’s Golden Age is best exemplified by Murillo’s monumental Immaculate Conception and Zurbarán’s Apotheosis of St. Thomas Aquinas. Source:frommers.com

Spain Religious Tourism: Catedral de Santiago de Compostela

By admin at 9:17 pm on Thursday, May 24, 2007

During the Middle Ages, this verdant city on the northwestern tip of Iberia attracted thousands of religious pilgrims who walked from as far away as Italy to seek salvation at the tomb of St. James. The cathedral itself shows the architectural influences of nearly 800 years of religious conviction, much of it financed by donations from exhausted pilgrims. Its two most stunning features are its Obradoiro facade (a baroque masterpiece), and its carved Doorway of Glory behind the facade. An enormous silver censor called the Botafumeiro swings from the transept during major liturgical ceremonies. Source:frommers.com
