Burgundy is an historical region of France, inhabited in sequence chronological by celtas, germanic Gauls, Romans, Gaul-Roman and several towns.
Burgundy was a province of France until 1790. Nowadays it is a region of France.
This extensive wine dominion great was by 600 years an independent kingdom, at some times was as powerful as same France, enjoying its height in century XV. Nevertheless through a stormy history, the vineyards of Burgundy partly survived thanks to the great knowledge, hastens and to the good taste of their gravies. Several of the orders had extensive vineyards through the region, among them the Horsemen of Malta, the Cartesians, Carmelite and, most important, Benedictinos and Cistercienses. Consequently 210km of length of Burgundy is upholstered of abbeys, monasteries and without number of beautiful románicas churches, mainly in Fontenay, Vézelay, Tournus and Cluny. There are also many fortified castles. The city of Dijon, famous by its mustard, was of great political and religious importance during century XV, has in addition a Museum to Beautiful Arts very complete, as well as a Cathedral of century XIII and a Ducal Palace that was residence of the old Dukes of Burgundy. Other pretty towns in this region are Sens and Macon, both has beautiful churches of century XII.
