The Plain extends between Lago Lemán in the southwest and the Lake of Constanza in the northeast. The altitude mediates of that centric region is of 580 meters. Great part of the industry and agriculture is concentrated in the Plain.
It occupies around the 30 percent of the surface of the country; in her two thirds live on the national population. It is a densely populated region: in 1 km2 lives 450 people. There are few regions in Europe with greater population density.

Urbanized landscape
Crossing the Plain from the Lake of Geneva to the one of Constanza it is almost impossible to be with uninhabited zones. The landscape reveals in any corner the presence of the man. When traveling from a city to another one one sometimes goes through a great number of places and villas that follow one another to short distance, without is possible to be descried the localities to each other. The Plain is the populated zone and, therefore, the urban belt of the country more.

The agricultural land: green and intensely cultivated
Green the intense one of the landscape is what jumps at sight when is traveled by the Plain. Perhaps the second impression that is had is that everything is placed and aligned very well, almost as if had been designed with the rule. The fields dominate the landscape, and this one is divided by a dense road network. Everything well is organized and ordered. The traveller never will be with endless extensive fields. On the contrary: the cultivated fields are alternated with meadows, from time to time separated by small parcels of forest. The little earth from which benefit can be removed, is cultivated of intensive form.

The Earth operation
In the Plain the urban centers and the industrial areas are in continuous expansion. Due to this urban growth the space of territories of culture diminishes incessantly. In Switzerland, from the Eighties the lands have been devoured by the cement to a rate of a square meter per second. This expansion has affected mainly the agglomerations. Three quarters of streams have been canalized and the 90 percent of drained marshes. Even outside the urbanized areas there were drastic changes. The orchards disappeared and were replaced by cultures that can mechanically be harvested. In the period from 1984 to 1995, by each four carved trees new one stood only one. However, the length overall of the alive fences has increased and efforts were made to renaturar the natural channels of the running water that in the previous decades had been covered and channeled.
