Basel, the capital of semi-Corner of Basel-City, is in the renano bend in the northwest of Switzerland. The copretty corner with Germany and France and comprises of the Euro-Region High Rhin that extends on Swiss land, German and French.
Basel is the center of the Swiss industries chemical and pharmaceutical. The archiconocidas pharmaceutical companies Novartis and Hoffmann-La Roche have their roots in Basel where still today are the seats of both partnerships and where partly the production is based.
The Rhin divides the city in two parts: The great Basel (Grossbasel) is in the left border and Small Basel (Kleinbasel) in the right border of the Rhin. Traditional enemistad between both Basileas is reflected on the one hand in the denominated “king languages” (Lällekönig) that are in the left head of the bridge, in the border of Grossbasel, and that loosen the language towards the right border. Small Basel gives back to the offense celebrating the carnival celebration of the Bird Faucet (Vogel Gryff) in which traditional figures of the carnival dance in the bridge of backs to the other side of the border as it shows of his disdain towards his eternal rival.
Basel is not only an important axis of the European railway network and the center of the section position of the Swiss Federal Railroads, also has an international airport (EuroAirport) that shares with the alsaciana city Mulhouse and the German city of Friburgo de Brisgovia. Great part of the airport is constructed on French territory. But also the four renanos ports in or near Basel are of great importance for the transnational commerce.
History
The city of Basel has its origins in the Roman colony Augusta Raurica (today Augst) and a Roman military camp. In year 740 seat became of a bishopric. Its first bridge on the Rhin was constructed in 1225-26. In 1356 great part of the city it was destroyed by an earthquake. The university - oldest of Switzerland it was founded on 1460 and it impelled the conversion of the city in a center of the erudition and the culture in Europe. Basel joined the Swiss Confederation in 1501.
