He is the greater one of the Galician provinces and less densely populated: 357,625 inhabitants (INE 2005). He limits the north with the Bay of Biscay, the west with the province of the Corunna and the one of Pontevedra, to the south with the province of Orense and to the east with the Principality of Asturias and the province of Leon. Its capital is Lugo and the main localities, to part of the capital, are Monforte, Breeding ground, Ribadeo, Villalba, Sarria, Chantada and Mondoñedo. The main river is the Miño, that also has been crossing the province of Orense and for of limit between the province of Pontevedra and Portugal, ending at the Atlantic. In the Cantabrian cornice it has many small rivers. The city was founded between 12 years 26 and adC by Paulo Fabio Maximum, legacy of Caesar Augusto, in whose honor it baptized as Lucus Augusti (the Latin word lucus means "clear" or "sacred forest", according to the different authors). Fruit of the carried out expansive policy at the time of Augusto, the city was founded on an old installed military camp before the Cantabrian wars. One is the oldest capital of Galicia. Its gentilicio is "lucense" or "lugués" and its shield is formed by two parts: in the superior one it appears a chalice flanked by two angels and in the inferior one, a tower surrounded by two lions. In the song the motto can be read "Sickle hic misterium fidei to firmiter profitemur" (Here, to firm faith, we confessed this mystery), in reference to eucaristía. Framed in a cleared, old mountain region and not very high, it is located on a plateau, to a height of about 465 meters on the level del sea, al foot of as they are the course del Miño river and of one of his affluents, the small Short while.
