General Information

The city of Toledo is considered by UNESCO "Patrimony of the Humanity". She is one of the most tourist cities of Spain. At the moment, Toledo conserves the image of medieval city, although for that reason the modernization of the city has not give inn.
Their monuments, museums, churches, hermitages and palaces, are crowded together within their old walls. The Greco (that in century XVI settled in this city) projects its shade on all the city, as if it wanted to protect it of something. Two buildings emphasize by their height and dimensions on the city, are: the Cathedral and the Palace. The first monument of the Imperial City is its Cathedral, the toledana call "dives". Visigoda was constructed on the old lot of the cathedral and the mosque. By its dimensions he is one of the greater temples of the cristiandad. It consists of five ships, the power station is greatest, as much in width as in height. The works began in 1226 and finalized in the 1493. The mixture of styles must to the great period passed between the beginning and the completion.
In the outside we have a estilogótico, in the interior we found from mudéjar to plateresco. Of the cathedral we will emphasize the following thing: claustro (in the lot there was a Jewish market); the bell tower presided over by a great bell, well-known like "the fat person"; sacristía contains pictures of: The Greco, Goya, Tiziano, Rubens, Van Dyck and Rafael; to the poor men long ago the bread in the door of the Mollete occurred him; other two doors emphasize: the one of "leones"y "the one of the pardon". The second great building of the Imperial City is, since there are saying, the Palace. Probably the first that they put stones were the Romans, later the Muslims reform it to turn it fortress, but he was the emperor Carlos V, in 1535, who remodela completely. In the War of Secession it is set afire by Austrian and Portuguese troops. In 1810 it underwent another destruction, later being reconstructed. In 1936 compatible troops to general Franco took refuge and was besieged by republican troops.
It was destroyed completely. In their restoration the original planes of Covarrubias architects were followed, author of the plateresca cover, Juan of Herrera, the huge stairs and of Luck Rodriguez. During years it was a place of pilgrimage of the followers of Franc. Nowadays she is host of one of the greatest libraries of Spain.
