The District of Braganza is a Portuguese, pertenciente district to the traditional province of Tra's-os-Montes and Alto Duero. It limits the north with the province of Orense, the northeast with the province of Zamora and the east with the province of Salamanca (being these the borders with Spain), the south with the District of Guard and the District of Viseu and to the west with the District of Real Vila. Area: 6608 km² (5º greater Portuguese district). Resident population (2001): 148 808 hab. Seat of the district: Braganza.
The district of Braganza is made up of two different zones, that correspond approximately to the division that was done in the group of the municipalities by NUTS III: to the north, the regions of greater altitude constitute the Terra Fria Transmontana, or theTra's-os-Montes Stop, where the landscape is dominated by the low declivities of planalto trasmontano; to the south, it is left the Terra Quente Trasmontana, of smoother climate, marked by the valley of the Duero River and by valleys of his affluents.
Also the Duero constitutes the more important geographic characteristic, sight than serves as limits the district throughout all its southern border, and of most of the Eastern border, until the northeastern extremity of the territory Portuguese. It is in the valley of the Duero where the lands of smaller altitude of the district are located, that almost is everything upon the 400 ms, with exception of valleys of the main rivers and the region of Mirandela.
Aside from the Duero, the main rivers of the district run of north to the south or the northeast to southwest, and comprise all gives hydrographic river basin of the Duero. The main ones are the Tua river, that is born in Spain as Tuela and bathes the ocidental zone of the district, and the Sabor river, that also is born in Spain (and enough near the Tuela), but passes through the Eastern zone of the district. Both have a network of affluents with some importance
