The District of Braga is a district Portuguese, pertaining to the traditional province of the Miño. It limits the north with the District of Viana do Castelo and with the province of Orense (Spain), to the east with the District of Real Vila, to the south with the District of Oporto and to the west with the Atlantic Ocean. Area: 2673 km² (15º greater Portuguese district). Resident population (2001): 831.368. Seat of the district: Braga.

It is a territory quite rough, dominated by altitudes elevated the east, next to the Spanish border and to the limits with the district of Real Vila, and descending until the western coast, in a relief crossed by valleys of several rivers that flow of this-northeastern to west-southwestern.

The greater altitudes are in the Yellow Mountain range (1 361 ms), in the limit with the district of Viana do Castelo and in the border with Spain, the Mountain range of Gerês, that has its greater altitude, 1 508 ms, indeed in the limit with the district of Real Vila and closely together of the Spanish border, and in the western part of the Mountain range of Cabreira, that reaches, within the district of Panties, 1 262 ms of altitude.

The valley of the Cávado river is the most important accident related to the hydrographic network, crossing totally the district and dividing its mountains in two differentiated areas. The Cávado enters the district by the east, where it serves as border with the district of Real Villa throughout some kilometers, and ends at the Atlantic Ocean at the coast of Esposende, to the west, the only zone of the relatively flat district. The hydrographic river basin of the Cávado includes the bond of the Homem River, that is born in the Gerês and ends at the Cávado, in the confluence of the councils of Green Vila, You land on water and Braga.

To the south of the Cávado, another important valley is the one of the Ave river, river that is born in the district, the Mountain range of Cabreira, and crosses its South part, serving as border with the district of Oporto throughout almost 20 km. One of the affluents of the Bird, the Vizela river, continues by the South limit of the district throughout other 20 km. The River This, that happens closely together of the capital of the district, is another excellent affluent of the Bird. There are several dams in the district. The most known it is Embalse de Vilarinho it give Furnas, in the superior course of the Ave river.

In the low Cávado Embalse de Penide is located and in the Cávado stop are Embalse of the Caniçada and Embalse de Salamonde. In the Ave river are some small dams and Embalse of the Ermal, that is quite great. The coast, including completely in the council of Esposende, is sandy. Main festejos: Of Thursday Santo to the Sunday of Passover, the most important ceremonies and processions of Portugal; at the end of April, industrial fair and artisan fair of the Minho; at the end of June, celebration of the day of San Juan (in the park, to 2 km to the South); in August, celebration of the day of Sao Bartolomeu and, the last Sunday, romería in Nossa Senhora do Sameiro. All Tuesdays in the morning, take place fair "of the yokes" in the field gives feira. Artisan products: Pottery and figures of Bethlehem; carved and painted wood embroiders, objects; imitation jewellery and miniatures in filigranada silver.
