Vila Franca de Xira is one industrial capital, but in their neighborhoods are famous towns in all the country by the quality of their wines, like Azambuja, to alenquer and two Arruda Vinhos. The trincadeiras-pratas grapes give to dry and afrutados and periquita and trincadeira preta, red targets that will make the delights of the Spaniards tired of tempranillo.
Those that they enjoy the bullfighting confinements will be able to run in front of the bulls by the streets of Vila Franca, like in Pamplona, the two first weeks of July and October.
The ribatejanos towns, agricultural in their majority, keep the best thing from the Portuguese hospitality and maintain the values of the traditional gastronomy of the country alive. As it happens in Spain with this one and other conserves of the sea, the best stews of codfish, the national plate luso, are inland, next to rich orchards, next to the flavorful vines watered by the water-bearing subterraneans of the Edge.
In these towns are cosy rural lodgings, equipped with all the comforts, with effort, in which the traveller receives a familiar treatment. In Rio Maior, for example, it is possible to lodge at the top of a hill in a wind mill of century XVIII, or in the old large house of a notable of the locality and to take a walk until the salt mines where still a constructed wood town has been working since for centuries entirely in which the salt also seems to have conserved the atmosphere.
