In the North coast to about 18 km to the northeast of
Ponta Delgada, one is the small one, although rich city of
Ribeira Grande located in a volcanic plateau that is opened to the sea. Its charming historical center with its narrow streets account with excellent examples of architecture of the centuries XVII and XVIII between which is the City council with an impressive outer perron and its municipal garden that deserves a visit well to admire magnificent units of Christmas trees of New Zealand. The parochial church of the Espírito Santo, of S XVII with its sumptuous facade is one of the prettier Baroque buildings of the archipelago. Aside from the Manuelinas influences that we observed in several buildings there is also an interesting bridge of eight arcs of s XVIII. Ribeira Grande continues breathing the atmosphere of the times of prosperity of the factories of spinning of linen and constructed wool of s XVIII along the river - the first colonos arrived at the beginning of s XVI and that brought the wealth to this place.
