Marvão is a Portuguese villa of the District of Portalegre, Alentejo region and subregion of the Alentejo Stop, with near 600 inhabitants.
She is host of a municipality with 154.85 km ² of area and 4,029 inhabitants (2001), subdivided in 4 freguesías. The municipality limits the north and the east with Spain, the south and the west with the municipality of Portalegre and the northwest with Castelo de Vide.
The villa of Marvão is medieval, white like the snow, paved with stones and irregular, winding and zooming, protected by a heavy line of dark walls in whose corners bastions are opened, matacanes and sentry boxes. The houses intrawalls are decorated by forged iron balconies, alentejanas chimneys and colorful windows manuelinas, supplied well for the days of the cold of the winter. Marvão founded the Arabs. There is one who thinks that she sent it to create a sarraceno caudillo of Marvan name, there by year 770. In Arab, Marvan means smooth, pleasant and pleasant. History could not find better eufemismo to name so beautiful town. Be that as it may, in 1160, Don Afonso Henriques conquered the villa for the Christian shields. More of a century later, in 1299, Don Dinis commanded to erect its arrogant castle.
