The Island of Corvo is the smallest island of the archipelago of Azores, Portugal, being located in the Eastern group of islands, to the north of the Island of Flowers. The island occupies a surface of 17.13 km ², with 6.5 km in length by 4 km wide. This located to 39º 40 of North latitude and 31° 05 of west longitude. In the genoveses maps of century XIV the Insula Corvi Marini is mentioned (the island of the marine crows or cormoranes), although is little probable that this designation specifically talked about this island, this name is the origin of the name of the island. At first it seems that it was a designation for the two islands of the Eastern Group of the archipelago (Flowers and Pothook). Both were discovered by Diogo de Teive in the return of their second exploration trip (1452), being very next. In the days of Enrique the Navigator was island of Santa Iria. Also he knew himself as “Small barren island the Flowers” (Iléu gives Flowers) and also “Island of the Frame” (Ilha do Marco), because the mount of the Caldeirão served like geographic reference to the sailors.
