Felgueiras Located in the heart of the valley of the Sousa river, in the limits of the district of Oporto, the municipality of Felgueiras vainglory of a rich and immense Romanesque legacy, visible in many of its churches and chapels, with an architecture characteristic of solid walls of granite and vestibules profusely ornamented.
The most remarkable examples are the impressive Monastery of Pombeiro, founded on century IX or XI, according to different sources, the pretty Church of Airães, that dates originally from century X, although underwent serious alterations in centuries XVII and XIX, and the neighboring Church of Unhão, founded on 1165.
Nevertheless, the region also offers interesting an archaeological patrimony of other periods, even dólmenes in Refontoura and Idães, several bridges and paved routes Roman and the fascinating Roman villa of Sendim, of century IV AC, still in excavation.
Several noble houses of family property rise by all the sector, characterized by a landscape of fecund fields and dense forests and florestas.
At the time of the table, the most famous specialty of Felgueiras is pão-of-the of Margaride, a type of produced spongy cake during centuries in that small town, but there are other tempting traditional gentleness, inherited of prescriptions of nuns, with peculiar names, like papos-of-anjo (barriguitas of angel) and toucinho do céu (bacon of the sky).
The gastronomy of the place includes in addition roasting to excellent cabrito, with rice cooked to the furnace, and “green” wines of the zone.
As far as the manualidades, the embroiderings of Lixa and the embroider of Felgueiras have gained deservedly their reputation.
