The city was an important agricultural center already from the antiquity due to its geographic position and to its proximity of Venice from which much benefitted. Unfortunately, they have been left few rest of the Roman period but, on the contrary, many of in center historical the medieval and renacimental period of the city are conserved. The heart of Padua is the Palazzo della Ragione that were built in 1222 (with alongside the seat of the called University “il Bo” of 1493) and the near seats delle Erbe and della Frutta.
The Basilica of S. Antonio, pattern of the city, is of century XIII and constitutes a synthesis of different styles: Romanesque, bizantino, gothic and moresco. In the seat near the Basilica the monument to the Gattamelata de Donatello can be admired. Also they are important monuments the Duomo, of the century XVI, and the Battistero that conserves in its interior the fresh airs of Menabuoi.
But the most important building of the city is, without doubt, the Chapel of the Scrovegni where are magnificent the fresh airs of Giotto made between 1305 and 1306. They are important museums the Pinacoteca of the city that has its seat in the Chiostri degli Eremitani where are unique paintings of Giotto, Tintoretto, Reni and Tiepolo (to name some single) and the Civic-Archaeological Museum where paleo-venetos rest are conserved.
