The city of Genoa is located in the gulf of he himself name, between the localities of Voltri and Nervi.
This city represents a synthesis of the several characteristics of the region in which it is, where the port and the old buildings remember its past of Marine Republic.
The province of Genoa extends by a surface of 1,838 km ² and includes/understands 67 municipalities in which 903,000 inhabitants reside, of that only 632,000 in the capital.
Genoa is an historical and culturally rich city, with beautiful monuments and particular places like the zone of Porto Antico (Old Port), a district dedicated to the culture and the free time where is the Aquarius, the Museum of the Antártida, the Cittá dei Bambini (City of the Children) made in the Palazzo of the Cotone, and the Pavilion of the Sea.
Recently the Lanterna has been opened again to the public, symbol of the city that now can be visited.
The towns of fishermen and the side streets of the Old City located near the port and calls are characteristic of this city “carrugi”.
In center with the city the medieval palaces abound that are surrounded by modern constructions that characterize a city that is synthesis between the old one and the contemporary.
One of the most important palaces of the center is Palazzo Ducale, old seat of the government of the Republic of Genoa that belongs to century XIII. Also the huge Towers of Soprana Porthole are admirable pertaining to year 1155.
The majestic Cathedral of San Lorenzo and the gentilicias churches of San Luca, San Siro deserve a visit and San Pietro in Banchi with their old factories included in the building.
Finally, they are important the church and the convent of Santa Maria I gave Castello who locates itself in hills where the first urban nucleus of Genoa was developed.
Also we remembered: the Palazzo Rosso where a splendid collection of greater works of art is conserved ligure of century XVII, the Gallery of Palazzo Reale that was residence of the Savoya and the Museum of Architecture and Sculpture Ligure de Sant'Agostino.
From the point of view of environment, the Urbano Park dei Forti constitutes an important reference. This extensive and abundant green area locates between Valle Sturla and the Valley of Bisagno and it has been object of initiatives of carried out repair and cleaning by the WWF which organizes guided visits and laboratories of environmental education.
We also remembered the great Aquarius of Genoa, one of the most complete Italian and European marine parks that lodge to more than thousand originating animal species worldwide. The structure of the aquarium was constructed in occasion of Expo 92 with the project of Renzo Piano.
