Greece (officially Greek Republic) is a country of the Southeastern of Europe that comprises of European Unio'n (UE). Located in the South side of the Balkan peninsula, it limits by earth with Bulgaria, the Old Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Albania to the north, the east with Turkey and the west and the south in the Jónico and the Mediterranean. Greece is a country member of European Unio'n (UE) located in the South end of the Balkan Peninsula in the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Greece is a country of Europe that occupies South half of the Balkan peninsula. Its surface is of 309,050 km² including inner waters like lakes, rivers and river basin of the Aegean; the last one being of great importance in the history and development of the culture and Greek civilization.
According to demographic studies of Eurostat the population of this country is of 11.244.118 inhabitants. Geographic and climatically the Greek territory very is varied. Counting on 9,000 islands, rocky small barren islands and outcrops, 15,021 kms of coast (more than 16,000 kms of coast including the rocky outcrops), being second of Europe after Norway and tenth behind the United States in coastal length. Greece is the country of Europe with greater number of mountainous tips. On them, 58.8% live in urban zones, whereas only 28.4% live in countryside. The population of the two bigger cities of Greece, Athens and Tesalónica, is of 5 million for the first and something more than 1 million in second. Although the population of Greece continues growing, the country faces a serious demographic problem: 2002 were the first year in which the number of deaths surpassed the number of births. Nowadays numerous immigrants in Greece live, from which 65% of these immigrants come from Albania. The massive migration from Albanians to Greece from the fall of the Comunism in Albania supposes a source of conflicts in Greece. There are smaller communities of originating immigrants of Bulgaria, Rumanía, Pakistan, the Ukraine, Poland and Georgia. The exact number is not known, since great part of the immigrants lives on illegal form in Greece. Numerous linguistic, religious or cultural groups also exist minority, like for example the gypsys. The only minority that enjoys special rights (due mainly to the Treaty of Lausana) is the Muslim minority of Thrace.
